Sludge is rich in organic matter, easy to rot and odor, and its small particles, often in the form of floc, are of high water content, strong water holding capacity and relatively low density.Inorganic sludge is also known as mud residue, and it is of high density, poor water retention, low water content, and good sludge stability, and it contains large particles and does not decay. In addition, dyes, slurries, additives in printing and dyeing sludge have nitro and amino compounds and heavy metal(copper, chromium, zinc, arsenic) have greater biological toxicity and are not environmentally friendly, posing awful pollution.
China’s National Hazmats List and China’s Solid Waste Guidelines stipulate: sludges textile, printing and dyeing cannot be defined as hazmats.Complex components kick printing and dyeing sludge into the category of general solid waste. There are certain environmental risks. Therefore, China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection's "Technical Guidelines for Viable Pollution Prevention and Control in the Textile Dyeing Industry (Trial)" stipulate that: textile, printing and dyeing sludge is likely to cause secondary pollution and its residue pollutes land, hence can’t be exposed to the wilderness or get land-filled without treatment.Therefore, textile printing and dyeing enterprises take pains to avoid secondary pollution by disposal of sludge.
